The short answer
A pool in Attica is filled from the mains, from a borehole or by water truck. Volume is length × width × average depth: an 8 × 4 m pool with an average depth of 1.35 m needs about 43 cubic metres. We test borehole water before filling.
How much water you need
The sum is simple: length times width times average depth. Some examples:
| Pool | Average depth | About |
|---|---|---|
| 4 × 2.5 m | 1.30 m | 13 m³ |
| 7 × 3.5 m | 1.35 m | 33 m³ |
| 8 × 4 m | 1.35 m | 43 m³ |
| 10 × 4.5 m | 1.40 m | 63 m³ |
From the mains
In most of the Athens basin the pool fills from the garden tap. With an ordinary hose, filling takes from one to a few days, depending on pressure. It is worth asking your local water provider about any terms or summer restrictions.
From a borehole
Many plots in Mesogeia, Lavreotiki and West Attica have a borehole. Its water can contain a lot of iron, manganese or minerals. Iron can stain the membrane brown. We run a simple test before filling and, if needed, suggest a filter or a water truck. Boreholes near the sea often give brackish water, unsuitable for a pool.
By water truck
A water truck brings drinking water in a tanker and fills the pool in a few hours. It is the answer when mains pressure is low, the borehole is unsuitable or you are in a hurry. On the islands and at remote holiday homes we use it often.
How much water is lost afterwards
After filling, the pool loses water to evaporation and to backwashing the filter. In an Attica summer evaporation is significant, especially on windy days. A cover cuts it a lot. The pool is not emptied every year: the same water lasts many years with proper care.
From our experienceDo not empty the pool to «change the water» without a reason. Apart from the waste, an empty membrane pool should not sit exposed to the sun for many days.
