The short answer
In the southern suburbs a prefab pool has to stand up to salt and strong sun. We choose stainless fittings of a suitable grade, a UV-protected Haogenplast membrane and, for plots near the coast, the engineer checks the distance from the foreshore.
Salt air: what we watch for
Air near the sea carries salt, which corrodes ordinary steel and aluminium. The pool walls are galvanised and never touch the water, because the membrane sits between. The visible fittings, such as ladders, handrails and lights, we choose in stainless steel suitable for a coastal setting.
The plant room needs ventilation but also protection from sea air. A closed box with louvres or a small room solves it.
Sun and membrane colour
On the Saronic coast the sun is strong from May to October. A light membrane, white or sand, keeps the water a touch cooler and gives the familiar turquoise. A dark one warms the water faster and gives it depth. All Haogenplast membranes are UV-protected.
See the colours on the membrane page.
Plots near the shore
If the plot is very close to the sea, the engineer checks the foreshore and beach line. At very short distances there may be restrictions. We check before quoting.
Near the coast the water table is often high. If we hit water while digging, we pump it during the build and lay drainage under the floor, so it does not push on the membrane when the pool is emptied for service.
A pool for a villa or holiday home
Many houses in Vouliagmeni and Varkiza are let in summer. A pool raises demand, as long as it is easy for the property manager to look after. See the page on pools for villas and Airbnb.
From our experienceAt houses near the sea, guests step into the pool with sand on their feet. A shower next to the ladder spares the filter a lot of work.
